I have been having the urge to learn how to knit socks toe up, but my mind keeps telling me that I can't do it....why would I bother with the method, the top-down method has been serving me very well. Not to mention, I am not very fond of short row heels--I really like my flap heels....BUT...I shall have a change of heart...why? The new knitty has the most gorgeous pair of socks I have ever seen--it has cables, it has lace...it is red!!! Hotty, Hotty, Hotty!
Meet my ultimate sock love--the Baudelaire sock designed by Cookie. The name stroke a chord right away--it reminded me of the Baudelaire children from A Series of Unfortunate Events and of one of the most influential poets of the 19th Century, Charles Baudelaire--yeah, I remember reading him back in college--no, not for a class but for personal enjoyment. I was crazy like that....was trying to get some culture....didn't work, tee, hee hee.
Be still my heart, I shall teach these hands to knit socks toe-up so I can dress my little tootsies with a pair of Baudelaire Socks.
Another must knit from this issue of Knitty, the Perdita bracelets, desiged by Elizabeth. It gives the children friendship bracelets a new twist. I can see me knitting a few for upcoming gifties. They are knitted with DMC thread. Quick and beautiful project.

Baudelaire pattern from Knitty is so pretty! I can't wait to have more time to browse all the pattern in this new issue.

I'm the same as far as socks are concerned, heel flaps top down, but I have been curious about toe up and that baudelaire is a good reason for me to learn :)

I have that same sock on my Must Knit List!
I prefer cuff down myself, but I have knit them from the toe-up and it is not so bad.
If you are looking for a free toe-up pattern with a normal flap and gusset google "Your're Putting Me On" Socks by Judy Gibson. She has a pattern for worsted weight and there is also a Generic Form to figure out your own gauge pattern. The heel looks just like a cuff down sock.

Thank you! FYI, I'm generally a top-down sock knitter too, but this stitch pattern was asking to be knit from the toe-up. And with an actual gusset and heel flap, toe-up isn't so bad. Though I'll be honest, I prefer kitchener over sewn bind-off, and I'm not sure why. Probably because the toe has less stitches. But you should try toe-up with a real gusset at least once. It's nifty!

Sounds like lots of knitting will be going on! Don't be intimidated by toe up socks, they may take a bit of practice, but it's quick to learn. Just make sure you cast of with a bigger needle, so the top isn't too tight.

There's even a toe up pattern with a heel flap in this month's Knitty.

I'm off to look at the new Knitty myself but just wanted to let you know that you can most certainly do a flap/gusset heel on a toe-up sock. I've done it on a few of my pairs.

I didnt' think of the children from the stories.. but I have to knit those socks because of the poet reference. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
